My Canyon is the same. I tried to cut that wire. Not possible. The defrost selector is built onto a tiny circuit board, along with the A/C switch. The output of that board sends a signal to the body control module, which toggles the A/C compressor. I could cut that wire and replace the A/C switch with a toggle switch, but I'd rather not do that sort of cob job on an almost new truck. I just pull the A/C compressor fuse instead.
