Very Surprised! Bone Stock 1995 Lincoln Town Car - 23.8mpg...

My Grandfather gave me his Lincoln, a 1995 Town Car with a 4.6L 2V V8 engine. It has 145K, and is in generally good shape, but I wasn't expecting much, and was kind of hesitant on taking a 5000 pound barge for my 80 mile commute. Guess what? 23.8mpg for the trip! Not bad for a rolling couch

The craziest part is according to the electro-thingie on the dash, I only averaged 37-ish mph. Most was stop-and-go traffic, or 70mph, which made it all the more impressive. Any ideas for 30mpg??

I was at the top of the fuel economy heap with my diesel Chevette, but it was about as comfortable as a loud, rough-riding bed of nails.

Nice! I could never get my '74 Olds Delta 88 out of the teens and I never tried with my 70 Nova with the 327 and four-barrel carb... suggestions... check tire pressure and increase as you feel it is safe, certainly to max sidewall. Drive the freeway stretch more slowly than today's 70mph. Try 60mph (a mile a minute). Also, can the road boat be flat towed? The owner's manual will tell you. If she can be towed flat, then she can glide in neutral, engine off, even with an automatic trans. But don't try that in traffic, and don't try it if you are not certain the car can be flat towed. You don't want to have a wreck or wreck the trans, kapeesh?

I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.

I'm not surprised. I have heard of folks with Crown Vics getting 27mpg on the highway.

Helps that they have 2.73:1 rear ends and turn 1500RPM going down the highway at 70.

Wow - talk about going from one extreme to the other - diesel Chevette to lap of luxury!

24 mpg: maybe that's why Warren Buffett drove one...

My 2004 town car got 28 mpg highway. Just easy driving 65 -70 on my last trip to Ca. I blocked the lower grill w duct tape and added a lower air dam. Even in gear car coasted for ever. Btw epa 23.

I have to say the Lincoln does a bit better than the Chevette as far as comfort goes. Although I actually didn't mind the Chevette as much as much as other people would lol. But it has A/C....and rides well...and goes more than 75mph if I need it to...

My Grandfather actually had the original sticker for it. Said 17 city, 25 highway. I'm going to try going 60mph with it and see what happens. I noticed it coasts like crazy as well, should work well with pulse and glide....if I could ever do that in LA

My first car was a Mark 8 (above) with that same motor. Got about 30 mpg highway, 20 around town. That was me driving like a 17 year old as well. Had 225k miles on it and had never been maintained. Definitely a Tuesday car. From the factory, it had air suspension that lowered it above a certain speed. Not sure if the town cars have that feature or not.

This one has the air suspension as well....I kind of wish it had the 5.0L motor so I could pump up the power more. Of course that doesn't apply on this message board ;D

The 4.6 seems really good on fuel!

They make superchargers for the 4.6 and are pretty common (cheap). I know, cause I used to want one until I found gas mileage was harder than horsepower.

Same motor, and basically the same car as the town car.
