Modding the load for aero
In 2012 and 13 we had the boat on the roof of the van. I didn't like it one bit:
In 2014 I got to move the boat into the van's wake and add a bit of a boat tail. With a smaller boat on top of the van.

Fixed. Gained a couple mpg along with it.

Would a very tight-fitting tarp on top of everything on the trailer help aerodynamics even more?

Probably not. The trailer is low and wide, and the kayak fits nicely in the notch above the nose box. It only sticks out maybe 3 inches on either side. The canoe rides right in the van's wake and tapers out nicely... but it's not centered. Tarping that into a larger boattail will have bigger problems with drag and visibility than any benefits feom filling in the van's wake above the trailer.

Real men don't play Tetris.
They move on to more challenging variants like Welltris:
and Block Out:

That guy's good!
Congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of government training.

It's probably easier working on top of the camper then the van. I do like the fold away cross bars on the roof rack of the Chrysler (or I guess Fiat now) vans. I was pleased to discover them on our van but don't know if I will ever get to use them!
