A little late now, but I'd have turned it around (Faster Backward) and put a gauge or at least a light or two in the back.

Had I been keeping it that would have been the plan - but after a while when you have the IMA battery in a G1 Insight switched off you lose the AC function, at which point the car had to go

Oh, haha. I thought I was seeing a reflection of a building in the hood. It actually is there.
So a hole was cut in the hood to accommodate a solar panel?

Yeah the hole was about 4 inches in diameter - almost perfect dimensions for the top of a flux capacitor if they hadn't done it with a saws all - I have no idea if the solar panel was there to cover it up but there was some 14 gauge wiring fed through the hole so who knows?
I had to cover it with something to trade it in so the fake hood scoop seemed like the cheapest fix at the time, although it felt sacrilegious putting a wind catcher on my hypermiler
