They wouldn't need those there if they had "panned" the bottom to the rear bumper. What happens on a lot of those cars is the rear bumper catches lots of air. This happens for a few reasons: relocated fuel tank, bumper supports removed or reduced, speeds in excess of 150. "ricers" try to imitate these racer proven tactics so that there car looks faster. Does it make a 1994 neon any faster, no.

...ah, but it "looks" like they're going "faster"...and "looks are everything" to those blindly following the "...looks can be deceiving..." modus operandae

I see a lot of these on Beetles around where i live, yet I haven't seen anything mentioned on this site about them. They are relatively inexpensive and look factory.
They also have the pre-made roof spoilers that you guys are arguing about.

I have noticed a few of these around as well on Civic coupes ( the spoiler at the edge of the roof line. )
I sure would like to see what it looks like on the rear glass below that spoiler.

Hmmmm
Irony....1 year to the day all this thread was hoppin. I came across a Ford Focus here in Poland, The European cars are way way wayyyyyyyyy ahead in aero design BTW, and thought it interesting.
I'll leave it to y'all to figure out why.
Did Ford know what they were doing here?
This is not after market, all the Ford short wagons have this.
