The clutch itself was not bad. Just the actuator and electronics.

Dry clutches had a higher failure rate than wet clutches, but it may also be due to most people not understanding how the DCT and even single-clutch AMTs work, treating them as if they were a traditional automatic. Surprisingly, single-clutch AMTs tend to be more favored by truckers and bus drivers here in Brazil, while they're not so favored by average car drivers, probably due to additional training being provided to fleet operators in order to take more benefit from the AMT.

It all comes down to understanding the machinery, doesn't it?

I understand how it works, and the mech said put in neutral before puttung in P. He also said there is nothing you can do... they just fail.

I had a brand new corolla 2006 with the MMT single clutch automatic. It was jerky but never a single problem (except at 30k km the motor went bad and was replaced under warranty, I asked to see the motor/broken parts, it was just a simple DC motor with a cable coming out of it, the kind you see on bicycle brakes, they did not let me keep it, said it was going back to HQ. So even if i had to fix it at my own dime, I doubt it would have been expensive.)

I understand that completely, lots of things are like that. But people who understand their machines, like a lot of us here and cRiPpLe_rOoStEr's fleet drivers, tend to make it a bit farther before that inevitable failure.

That is almost certainly true, especially when purchasing the vehicle new.

My last 2 cars were new for that reason. I thrashed my Subaru turbo, but it went to its grave at 207k with the original clutch.

It was quite shocking for me that Toyota would use a seemingly cheaper transmission in Europe, while in a more budget-conscious market such as Brazil the Corolla resorted to a regular automatic. Well, considering Europe still has a higher pick rate for the manual, the presumably fewer changes on hardware enabling some degree of parts commonality with the manual tended to justify the MMT, resembling what Fiat did with its Dualogic transmissions in Brazil back in the day.

Hnm... i don’t think it was a parts/logistics decision. Europeans value fuel consumption and efficiency a lot.

When buying the car the numbers for this automatic transmission were lower than the manual gearbox fuel consumption numbers. That is why I chose it, had it been the opposite I would have bought a manual.

Luckily I'm a driver, not a robotic operator of the EPA test cycle. Until I get a Tesla, I'll get real efficiency that an AT can't give by doing my own shifts.
