New echo driver

Just did my first hypermile trip in my 2001 Echo (well, a little hyper anyway) just used a few tips, mostly timing the coasting, and got over 48mpg. I pick up up my new 2009manual shift Corolla CE tomorrow but I'm loving my Echo again for this evening. I know I could easily break 50mpg based on what I saw today. This is a great site.

Steve

Welcome to EM! Sounds like the Echo is going out with a bang. Let's hope another hypermiler takes care of her.

Welcome to the site. The Echo is a great car, but so is the Corolla. If you want, you can get 50 mpg out of it too (although the Echo is capable of 60+).

Daox

Thanks for the welcome. Is the Echo capable of 60mpg stock or are there mods required?

Yep, you can get it to 60 in stock form if you use pulse and glide. Check out our 100+ hypermiling tips link at the top of the page.

Thanks Daox

Just picked up my Corolla. The mpg gauge on the dash gave me 5.3L/100km on my 1 hour drive home. I did notice that the real time mpg would fall back pretty dramatically when i lightened up on the pedal while cruizing but rpm stayed the same and speed maintained. Is this an acuarate measure based on fuel injection or is it simply approximated by pedal position?

Nice! 5.3 is pretty close to your Echo numbers.

The changes you see on the instant gauge will be an engine load-based calculation (measuring either fuel consumption directly, or air consumption and then extrapolating fuel consumpsion), not just pedal position.

But you've just discovered how very tiny changes in engine load (through pedal position) affect fuel consumption, and why basjoos installed a hand lever in his car to gain super accurate control over his gas pedal while cruising. (See his Aerocivic thread.)

Welcome to the forum!

When i coast in neutral in my 09 corolla manual, the mpg meter reads 0.5 L/100km, 0.8L/100km, etc, depending on my speed. When i just release the gas pedal going down hill the meter drops to 0.0L/100km. Is this just a false reading or has Toyota done something cool to cut back fuel?
