Never had a roadside inspection pop the hood, but they did have sniffers for the tailpipe and my tickets were for excess soot emissions at the tailpipe. Come to think of it, don't remember having an annual sniff smog check for emissions until I moved out of LA county. I recall the various mandated aftermarket stuff was a visual just to see it installed, and typically PCV, timing retard, no headers.
