I agree with Mech completely on the CX. As the third best, sixth gen option, consider the DX HATCH. It had the same gearing as the HX (taller than the DX coupe/sedan) and it was lighter (2242lbs curb weight). It's a nice platform if the HX and CX (in that order) cannot be found.

I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.

I wouldn't call the DX gears, "great". Just less bad than the EX.

HX and 5th-gen VX had lean burn and no others.
CX/DX/LX have ok gear ratios.
HX has the best 6th-gen gears.
CX/VX are even better, but 5th gen (but they are interchangeable).
Run away from the HX cvt. Poor reliability and less mpg.

A good HX will be hard to find. I'd look for a DX or CX if you can't find one.

Funny - I bought my 98 HX with a 149,700 miles on it... got lucky as I found one with the 5sp. I really like this car.
