Actually, how would an MOT place even test if a DPF is working ?

When my car was made (2007) DPFs were optional.

The muppet of the first owner specified it but the emissions test should compare my car to to the standards of 2007 without DPF.

So how would they know if it wasn't working and my car passed the non-DPF standard anyway ?

MOT testers are not allowed to plug in OBD stuff or take anything apart - for example they can test brakes on a test rig but aren't even allowed to remove a wheel to look at the material.

I think this is a smokescreen - to coin a phrase.

Small update - the on board computer is the traditional VAG +10% over reading - I calculated 52 for the last tank, the OBD displayed 56.

Soot test.

They'll know it instantly if it has a working DPF or not, just going by the numbers of the soot emissions.

It's how it's done over here in the Boondocks .
The soot test is extra €€€€€€ , of course, and with 80% diesels out here, the fancy test equipment pays for itself.

Yup, it's done to cool off the DPF which was heated up during regen.

Life would be easier if they just put in a green light saying "DPF regeneration active - keep calm and drive on" or some such

You are missing my point about the DPF being optional in 2007 and the limits in force at the time.

There surely was a time when you didn't hear people ranting about Toyota's or Honda's - they were essentially bullet-proof.

Agreed that would be nice, maybe a countdown ?

I think the lack of use of this car contributed to that as it hasn't happened again since - miles are now near 6K - so nearly double.

Over here, they knew without asking - probably on VIN.

Hägar dated back to 2005, and had the then very rare, optional DPF.

Browse some old Datsun (Nissan), Toyota, Mitsubishi and Subaru tests here

They didn't seem all that brilliant.

That tapped we did expect a £26K (nearly $50K) new car experience which didn't happen.

Yes but because it was optional they (the testers) just checked it was still physically in place - yes - and then checked the car against the (all non DPF) limits in force at the time, which he passed.

It might be working and it might not. If not would it drag emissions down below the targets of the day or just do nothing to make them worse ?
