It isn't just the body shape and the super-tall sixth gear, but also the direct injection in the engine. It produces a lot of torque through high-compression at low RPMs so it can just tick over at highway speeds. The 2.4l Direct Injection Hyundai engine has one of the highest compression ratios I've ever seen in a normally aspirated engine.

Congratulations!
What hypermiling techniques did you apply? What speed do you drive on the highway?
Keep it up! Let's go for 50 MPG!

The OP hasn't posted since April, so might be gone.
Wonder if the newer Sonata is really that much more efficient, or if the OP was using the cars over reporting OEM readout. The best I have ever gotten out of our auto equipped 09 Sonata is a dissapointing 34 MPG.

He's not gone. I think he's just too busy to waste his time in the forums. He's logged 5 fill-ups since April - the latest entry in his fuel log was September 13. It looks legitimate to me with actual miles and gallons logged. His % over EPA is about in line with what I get out of my 4-Liter Ford Mustang. His driving conditions and techniques must be similar to mine.
Best I've been able to get out of my Mustang was 34.34 MPG.

I'm still here, just been really busy this year with work and health issues.
My best was 45.5 mpg or so on 87 octane E0, which a new station has gone up by me that has it! Thank God.
I don't use engine off coasting but pretty much use all of the other tips to help.
Getting ready to run an oil change interval on an oil I've yet to try since I have 2+ years of data on my current oil.
My rpm's at 65 mph are 2280 so no, not a super tall 6th in this car.
I do not use the cars gauge as it reads 2.5 mpg high 99% of the time, all mpg calc's are manual.

Same here. My Mustang's AVG MPG gauge is a bit optimistic.

That's a bit short. My Mustang runs 1980 RPM @ 65 MPH in 5th (top) gear.
Congratulations on achieving 50+ "% over EPA combined". That's not easy (for most people).

My goal has been to stay at 50%+. It is difficult to keep it there. Have had a good number of 50 mpg trips of 40 miles and less, on optimal days with more than one stop to make. From a cold start my best has been 48.5 mpg.

You're missing the boat then, bro! EOC is the absolute easiest way to get a massive boost in mpg.
I immediately jumped almost ten mpg the first tank I EOC'ed in the Black Widow, and I was an instant convert! All I did was EOC up to all stop signs and lights, nothing crazy.
Try it for a tank and see if you ever go back to NOT doing it!
Nice job though!
*BTW, my kid inherited the Black Widow, and he's gonna start EOCing this tank in it. He also has a second Festiva (with AC) that he managed to get over 48 mpg this tank. I'll convince him to join here, he was pretty pumped about that 48 mpg tank!

Ditto...
Having a kill switch is the way to go instead of cycling the ignition switch.
Also, a kill switch will allow all of the vehicles systems to remain functional. The other big plus is not having to worry about the steering wheel locking up. A kill switch will also allow your ultragauge to remain booted up.
Just try it. Plan a short route and drive it without EOC and then with EOC.
You'll be impressed...

If it's an automatic, than the OP should not use engine off coasting. I would not risk damaging the transmission. If it's a manual, then more power to you.
