Subscribed, I love these old Metros.

For what it's worth, you can get a RockAuto alternator for $80 new, or a remanufactured one for $67 after a $40 core charge (might or might not be worth it after shipping).

1989 GEO METRO 993cc L3 Alternator / Generator | RockAuto

Might be able to do better on eBay, but you can never be sure of what you're getting.

That's an awesome deal. But I'm afraid it's to late I already replaced the alternator with one from a local guy who refurbs them, for $100. So at least it was a good price. But $80 for a new one, I didn't think that was possible.

With your local rebuilder you are keeping your money in the local economy and if there is a problem I bet it would be taken care of quickly.

Rock Auto is great, but in the event of a problem, you are facing down time and shipping.

I doubt any newly made alternator is built in the US anymore. Might be for OE manufacturing but most likely not for aftermarket replacement parts.

If not for the local rebuilder Rock Auto is your best option.

Is WD-40 not an option?

Sometimes it may be not the best, but actually the ONLY choice. Anyway, how are you going to deal with those seized bolts? Likely to try an impact wrench?

cut them off.
try a hole saw on the interior panels. might save a few pounds.

I still have not had time to try. But the plan is soak them in penetrating oil. Then put a braker bar on a spline drive socket. If that doesn't work then impact. If that doesn't work Cut. That's the way I usually approach seized bolts just have to be careful not to round them with step one, or your cutting. I suppose you could try an ez-out type remover for rounded nuts but they almost never work.

If you would eventually cut them with a hole saw, remember to paint around the holes to avoid them to start rusting apart quicker. But anyway, it would become harder to revert such mod if/when you sell the Metro.
