Just 2 questions, does this controller have electric reverse, and regenerative braking?

Hello Gulah,

This controller will have a reverse output signal to control reversing contactors, but not direct reverse control. It does not have regenerative braking as it is just a simple buck circuit.

So why not just make the regenerative braking available? Sorry, but I don't understand why not do it, if it is so simple?

Its not simple to do for multiple reasons. Number 1 reason being series wound motors cannot simply be used for regenerative brakes. Number 2 would be that it requires a totally different power stage that has 4x the amount of high current switching devices. It is not a cost effective controller to produce to be used in such few applications. I am using a series wound Warp11HV in my Corvette with a transmission. Because of this, I do not need to reverse the motor. The regenerative braking would be nice to absorbe a little bit of energy, but When I get time, i will finish my regeneration controller for adding a large truck alternator to the tail shaft to act as a brake. But that wont be till the car is done in the first place.

Otmar's Regen Article

It isn't complex but controlling it would be. Some curtis controllers overseas had it built in, Lee Hart did a Curtis 1221 to 1221R regen curtis conversion once, it wasn't overly complex; in an OTR vehicle it burn't out over about a year. Also you need to neutral time your brushes and have interpoles.

I am thinking the Curtis method Lee Hart found would likely be just fine if you OVERSIZED the heck out of the controller with modern parts and downrated it to maybe 25%.

I do think series regen is worth looking into even though it doesn't work at low speeds and isn't real controllable (hey I just want to stop, don't care how fast)

Everybody needs to brake
I live in a volcanic origin island, so for me that's a major component. But it's still great to know you're going to try regen

Hi Adam,this is a smart way for regen. would you use a clutch type of engagement like the one used on auto ac compressors or will it be always mechanically connected and elect.controlled?

Also at which point is the controller board now,really on edge to know, will you have boards for shipping any soon?

Like evimarn said, a lot of us have been anxiously awaiting the availability of your “Uprising Controller”. What is the development status of it ???

I also was wondering about the compatibility of your 3 module driver PCB with 600A/ 600V Powerex CM600dy-12nf IGBT modules, would it work with them?

Hello Mark,

YES, I believe that the modules will work perfectly. They have the same gate terminal spacing as the 400A modules. They are .71" wider in total though but I believe the spacing is adequate to make them fit. This driver should be a drop on solution for driving those modules. Just need to tune the gate resistors for those.

Ive been wanting to order a panel of these, so if the market is there, I will place an order.

Adam,

I am interested in a set of controller PCBs (Controller & Driver) for a winter project that I am working on.

Some questions;

1. Did you finish beta testing your Uprising DC controller?

2. Is the firmware completed for the new atmega1284P micro controller now?

3. Will your SMT controller come assembled and tested, as a kit, or as bare PCBs?

4. Have you calculated their cost?
