I actually don't care if it is optimistic or pessimistic as long as I have a *relative* barometer, aka feedback when I am doing something right or wrong. But, I suppose they would *want* to be accurate for liability reasons that Honda recently dealt with in their Civic Hybrid.

Ha ha, maybe you should sue Toyota,

If MPG readouts were required in all new cars, there might be a shift for people to get into more effecient cars, I've seen a lot of people fool themselves about the mileage they're getting.

"I get like 300 miles a tank"

But then again, they're just as likely to just ignore it. Or put a piece of tape over it as I've seen many people do with check engine lights. (Myself included)
