NIO EP9 electric supercar
Old school supercars beware, the silent AND autonomous NIO EP9 will come around you. The electric super car went around Circuit of the Americas circuit and set the fastest production car lap AND a fastest driverless lap. The driverless car went around COTA circuit in 2 minutes and 40.33 seconds, reaching a top speed straight of 160 mph. A professional driver drove it to set the production car lap record at COTA of 2 minutes and 11.30 seconds, with a top speed of 170 mph.
NIO reports the car has four high-performance inboard motors with four individual gearboxes, 1 MW of power, 1,342 hp. 0 to 124 mph in a 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 194 mph. It set a time of 7 min. 5.12 second lap, NIO can claim the title of the world’s fastest electric car at Nurgburgring! Nice looking too!

The EP9 became the king of the 'ring, for a few days at least...
What a machine the EP9 truly is. Yours for $1.48m.
It tackled the Nurgburing again, achieving the fastest lap time, sadly only briefly, beaten by a McLaren P1 a few weeks later.

It depends on definition. The NEXTEV Nio EP9 is still the fastest production car. The McLaren is a dedicated track car; the car that did the lap had one-off special adaptations to make it road legal.
See Fastest Nurburgring lap times 2017: quickest cars and lap records | Auto Express
https://nurburgringlaptimes.com/lap-times-top-100/ does not even list the P1.

If it only needs to be street legal it won't stand a chance against this:
The Worlds only street legal F1 car.
Makes whatever time it set rather irrelevant.
So there you have it. Take a production car, do only mods that do not change its performance (safety mods like roll cage and fire extinguisher etc) only then does the lap time say something.

Right. The EP9 is a production run of 7 cars.

The workers who assemble them will not yet have fallen into apathy from endless repetition. But yes, it is a production run and the cars are built for road use.

Meanwhile back on Mother Earth:
Volkswagen I.D. Buzz Concept First Look: Gratefully Undead - Motor Trend
Quote:
We’ve been teased with the Microbus Concept 2001, Bulli (2011), and at last year’s CES, the BUDD-e—all were takes on Volkswagen’s iconic original air-cooled, rear-engine Type 2 bus. Each troweled on plenty of design cues to evoke the hippy original, but the first two were attempting to drape that monospace design over a conventional front-drive combustion powertrain, and even the BUDD-e, which was said to be electric, failed to eliminate the traditional hood and grille—two absolute microbus buzz-kills.
This latest swing seems much more likely to connect, and it is the only one that really looks the business.
|
Jason Torchinsky will approve of the 'eyes' being the headlights, not the windshield (that's just weird). The hippy bus is [almost] back and it's all wheel drive.

I've always thought "production car" records were meaningless.
If I produce two cars and sell one to a client, that car is...?
