Technically speaking, I'm not sure they have any backorders.
All the cars to be delivered in the 7 roll-out states were pre-ordered.
When a pre-set number was met, ordering was closed.
It is going to open up again.

have been allowed to make a reservation to make an order. I think actual
ordering will begin in late 2011, delivery probably in late 2012.

And then there's the "Forgotten 36" states whose opportunity to
reserve/order is even further in the future. Capacity however will increase
dramatically with a US plant in Kentucky, when 2012?

At least that's what I understand, but I may be confused.

FWIW, Nissan has reported selling 19 LEAFs in 2010.
