In other words, your computer is now the size of your thumbdrive.

I have an Intel Compute Stick that the whole computer is just slightly bigger than a thumb drive.
Most of my apps don't work on Linux easily.

How does one run business software without updating? Quicken and turbo tax change daily, sometimes just fixing the fatal error they installed yesterday.
Then there's the mandatory win 10 uprgade.........
Even pihole wants to update all the time. That one I can turn off

You do it the right way and install MS DOS and then Lotus 123.

No. I took a comment as being about abstracting the 'computer' from it's hardware.
But the new computer is the size of a deck of cards and has 4 USB, 2 [micro]HDMI. 2 DVI ports and a socket for the new neural chip HAT.

I've been willing to try Puppy Linux for a while. Maybe next year I'll do it, and if it serves me as well as switching from an old Nokia phone to Android, it won't take long for me to finally switch away from Windows.

I never enjoyed switching from one version of Windows to another, yet I had a good experience with Windows XP.

Just look at the hardware requirements for any recent Windows or Mac OS, while a much more streamlined OS could do it better, and effectively increase the useful life of simpler hardware. Well, maybe if KaiOS released a desktop version of its OS meant for feature-phones, enabling them to perform almost the same as a smartphone, I guess I could stay some 20 years without even lurking about switching to an OS to another, even if I replaced computers once in a while if and when I wanted something with more memory.

I've never used quicken nor turbo tax and I've ran my own business. I just look at the IRS papers and do the math. It's not rocket science. But if you want the new fangled stuff you have to do it the new fangled way.
It's like smartphones, smartTV's, smartcars, smartrefrigerators, smartlight-switches: They all need the internet to work properly.
How did people do their taxes before the internet existed? I still have my slide rule, I can also use that if I want.

Being forced to "do taxes" is unconstitutional. Nature does not provide that a debtor must figure the debt AND be legally accountable for the 3 million word tax code. Setting aside the severe moral problems, there is no rational basis for how taxation is implemented. A slide-rule doesn't protect one against a weaponized agency with unlimited resources.
