why can't you check them? You don't need a special scanner, look up the procedure like I said.

ahh. I found a way to check them, but it requires the check engine light to be active. I will try the procedure without the light on to see if it is stored anywhere in memory. My guess is that since i have cleared the check engine light the code is possibly gone at this point since it is an obd 1. This car stuff is all new to me sorry if i seem ignorant in how to scan this. I am learning.

Ok I got the info from the obd. There is trouble in the vss circuit. my manual says i must replace the entire instrument cluster in order to replace the vss cicuit since it is built in to the cluster. Off to the junk yard i go!

Well, it doesn't sound critical. Your car probably drives fine, it is likely emissions related.

And you can see precisely how much fuel you are using now (just not distance or mpg) so that you can still "beat your high score" for recurring trips by looking at the "current" screen and seek out the route/technique/mod that uses the least fuel. You have an odo and a speedo (and a car) that still work for distance/speed.

I wouldn't be suprised if you could look at the speedometer and the gph and do the instant mpg in your head after a tiny bit of practice. You just divide mph by gph to get mpg. so 60mph @ 2gph = 30mpg. 30mph @ .5gph = 60mpg

I did notice 1/3 tank is already gone in under 100 miles, so it must have an effect on my mpg. I usually get better than that. I will do the math until i get a chance to take the gauge apart and look at the reed switch to check for damage.

I just threw in a junkyard cluster and the check engine light is gone. I couldn't wait to test the mpguino so i temped the wires together being very careful not to repeat the previous issue. And the Mpguino works perfectly now. I just need to make some minor calibration adjustments. the speed is different from the speedometer reading and my gps reading. It's reading average of 54 mpg. it says i'm going faster than i actually am. may need to adjust measurements on tire size ect. Thanks again for all the help. next i need to get a new economy grind camshaft for the metro to improve mpg. and maybe a higher gear on the final in the tranny.

reed switch photo

Here is an internet picture of the unit that is causing my vss code. The wire broke and separated from the reed switch. I will try radio shack and solder a new one in place. for now i have a temporary gauge with no tachometer from a generic metro. Hey thank you so much for all the help on here I have learned alot! And will continue!

Thank you

Thank you dcb i received the part in the mail yesterday and everything is now up and running as it should. The only issue now is that the screen freezes when i flip through the options while driving. strange! I tested the unit out yesterday and this morning. I hope it's just a fluke. I've currently got my vss set to 8211, but still dialing in my accuracy.
