POLL: Should I make this trade?!?
HA! I FINALLY found someone who wants to trade their crx for my neon
Should I do it? I MOST LIKELY shouldn't right? Tell me your opinions. BTW, I have NOOOO money if something ever breaks on this car >.<
My car (if you dont know):
2000 dodge neon
almost perfect paint job
everything is stock
the only things wrong with it is, there are 3 dings, bad rear tires, no a/c, and no rear window defrost
great interior
4 disk changer
auto
like 180*** miles
His CRX:
rebuilt d15b2 engine (x > 9,000 miles)
2**,*** miles on body
5 speed that works fine
cracked windshield
new tires
uber loud exhaust (me no like that)
brand new alternator
small dents in every outside panel
only 1 windshield wiper
lowered 2 inches
really bad interior
every interior panes looks like poop
steering wheel is duct taped (LOLOL)
radio does not work
window rolls up bad
hatch barely locks
His "BETTER" crx he wants to trade:
He said its a 1990 on the phone, says 1991 online??? ~.~
SAYS he rebuilt the engine 20k ago but no proof
d15 stage 3 clutch
horribly painted interior
still no a/c
all gauges work
ugly cheap racing seats
ghetto-ed in pioneer cd player
17 inch ugly rims w/ super wide tires
no dents!!!
worst green paint job that is flaking in about 50% of everywhere
Everything is painted, didnt put tape over anything... *shame shame*
rear window ugly a** flaking tint
ugly shift boot w/ fake c/f shift knob
rear windshield wiper
both windshield wipers
he said it needs a valve cover gasket
needs spark plugs
muffler is off track (look at pics)
"wired up for a system" *who cares*
looks like there is a little rust
Seat belts are really ghetto-ed

No way. You're going from needing two rear tires, to needing a windshield, wiper, window regulator, hatch lock, radio, and more. From a clean body and interior to a junkyard. From known reliability/history to unknown.

Yeah, I agree - I'd only do this if I had the money. A lot of old honda parts are 'spensive, especially crx parts. Plus, I baulk at any photo of a car with a cold air intake and/or "short" shifter w/ a custom knob. This immediately screams to me napoleonic complex ricer with not a lot of money to do things right, but a heavy foot. I wouldn't be surprised if the engine were a little beat up in this crx.

No way. If you could buy the CRX as a project car or something, while keeping the Neon as the daily driver, that's one thing. But in this case, better the devil you know versus the devil you don't. And from the pics/description, it doesn't sound like the CRX has been taken care of....

No way. Unless you have another car that you can use every day, and make the CRX your project car, it's not worth it. You'll be trying to fix something on it, and then have to go to work, or school, or whatever, and you'll have to stop what you're working on and hope it works.
You're trading a perfectly functional car for something that needs work. Is there any paperwork on the engine rebuild, or is it something the guy did himself, and says it was 9000 miles ago? You'll have to buy a new windshield, you'll have to sort through the probable wiring mess to get the radio working, and a bunch of other stuff. No wonder this guy wants to trade, it's a steal for him.
My advice would be to save up money so you can either buy a CRX as a project car, or save enough so that you can trade for a decent one, and still have spare cash to make some repairs. 20+ year old cars are going to need repairs at some point, it's inevitable. That's why they don't give 20 year warranties on cars. It's not just the engine and transmission that might need some help, there's lots of other moving parts on the car, and the cost to repair them can add up pretty quick. If you don't have the extra money when something happens, you'll be regretting trading a working car for something that's falling apart.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help so far...
I understand all the things your saying and yeah when I wanted to trade my neon for a crx, I wanted a crx in about the same shape as the neon, so damn near perfect
From the outside the car looked, good enough since I dont really care about outer appearance but the inside was just too much to even think about at once...
So.... Next question: If I for some odd reason DID take the CRX and asked for the CRX and money to go with it, how much do you think would be reasonable? about $500? Tell me what ya think plz!

Here's some KBB private party values for the cars.
2000 Dodge Neon Highline - I left the options as the default values, and used 180k miles.
Excellent: $2,135
Good: $1,810
Fair: $1,460
1989 Honda Civic CRX Hatchback 2D - used 200k miles, left options as default, but unchecked the AM/FM cassette box, since this car doesn't have a working radio. I don't know if the CRX is an HF or SI model, that will probably change stuff.
Excellent: $1,000
Good: $825
Fair: $500
From the looks of things, I would consider your car in good shape, and the CRX in fair shape. So that's a difference of $1310. I doubt anyone would be willing to give you a CRX and $1300 for a Neon, but you should have KBB information with you before you go make any kind of offer. If the guy wants to get rid of it, he might be willing to go somewhere close to $1000, if you make the Neon look nice. In the situation that you're in, where you don't NEED a car, I wouldn't take anything less than $1000. You're going to have to spend a decent amount of money to get it back in respectable condition, and personally, I don't feel it's worth it.
