tuft testing prep
Oh, go ahead. Chuckle about the extra crush zone afforded by a boat tail! Doesn't anybody remember basjoos' highway incident? The concept has been field tested already!
There were even pics, if I remember.

Speaking of pics...
Moving images to come.

action shot
The air looks good!
The tufts on top behave very nicely (no surprise). The lower side (behind the wheel skirt) seems much less turbulent than when this was on the Civic.
Stills captured from the video...
Top, stopped at the side of the road; Bottom at 80 km/h / 50 mph:
Another big difference from the Civic: the air likes the notch behind the tail light much more. Partly because I widened that section by about 1.5" on each side so it's a shallower cut-out; also possibly because the Prius tail light has a generous radius on the vertical edge, so flow wraps more easily into this area?
I dunno. All I know is aside from the tufts immediately behind the light, the rest are all streaming back, as hoped.

More early MPG results... (still not ABA though)
Best highway mileage ever this weekend for one leg of a trip (100 km / 60 mi) I took to visit my sister & her family. Pretty ideal conditions: 16 C / sunny & dry / next to no wind. Cruising speed: 80 km/h on the scenic route (50 mph). Cruise control most of the time, but I also drove with load a bit (tapped speed up & down on some hills).
3.3 L/100 km = 71 mpg US
The car+tail loves the warmer weather. That's a massive difference from the previous best for the same trip (with tail) of 3.8 L/100 km = 62 mpg US in colder, windier conditions, which was even at a slightly slower cruising speed.

The Volt at 3:33 has smoother wheels than the U.S. version.

Funny you noticed that about the Volt.
He's still got his winter wheels/tires & plastic wheelcovers on.

I missed the Volt, but do all houses in Canada look the same?

Yes!
I once read a funny description of housing design/style in much of Ontario: "greige" (grey/beige).

The limo video
Very interesting vid.
I took a screenshot:
In green a strange wind direction !
In red the aero is not good, because the rear bumper is too narrow, just after the rear wheels. Bad factory design.
Do you think adding "flaps" like these this would be a good idea, but close to the rear wheel ? Just a piece of coroplast.

I noticed both of the things you mentioned as well, Planetaire.
I also noticed the built in box cavity in the design out back. Nice.
