I unhooked and unbolted the alternator last night. It went super fast and easy.

UNTIL I had to pull it out. You have to move the exhaust out of the way for the alt to come out. The third and last nut I needed to take out of the downpipe flange did not want to come out. (Used plenty of PB Blaster) I almost rounded the damn thing off twice. Time to put the ratcheting wrenches aside and buy/borrow a "real" 17mm. Why did I leave them all at home??

Anyway hopefully the thing will be together in a couple days and I'll be able to see if it's holding a charge.

Also. The alt is hidden behind the engine, under the intake manifold. Is it always bass ackward like that with crossflow heads, or was it just Mazda trying to be difficult?

Mazda must have taken their lead from Ford. My daughter's Taurus wagon had the alternator in the same location( between the engine and firewall, under everything, over the cross member, and behind the wheel/inner fender skirt. 3 hours for swap over, lying in the snow/slush, and it got up to 20 degrees f. I really don't like working on Fords.

I do, however, like your paint job.

I think most Fords are Mazdas. Next time try the secret formula, 1/2 pure acetone, mixed with 1/2 ATF, it will break almost anything loose. Get some graphite to put on the treads before you put exhaust bolts together.

New alt in, everything's back together. I turned it on and the voltage immediately jumped from about 9 to normal, 14-ish. Seems like it worked! Pic and vid coming later

(BTW I had to unhook half the damn exhaust and wiggle it around, then the nut virtually fell off. weird)

I've been waiting for the perfect time to use the beater status to my advantage. That time has come in the form of an E92 parked over not one but TWO lines.
