well im not entirely sure how to calculate it, but its a 12 gallon tank and i get between 150 and 220 miles per tank, that sounds to me like its pretty sad, but like i said im not sure how to calculate it. well right now im running around town alot, lota stop and go. i ride the freeway at least once a week for about 100 miles. i coast when i can, instead of using the braking system, and i use cruise control since i learned that it helps to regulate fuel usage (whether thats true i dunno, just what i was told by a mechanic). oh btw, i think id look funny rolling down the street backwards, i think the cops would stop me in a heartbeat, so i dont think that would fly to well lol.
***EDIT**** i found that my pt has a 2.4 liter engine and is supposed to get 18 city/24 highway. i dont think i am getting that at the moment. and i dont think that its a 2.4 liter engine, though it maybe.

It is imperative that you stay in the slow lane and never leave it.Instead leave early and drive slower.
Your gas mileage is horrible at 200 miles per 12 gallons of gas your mpg is 16.67 miles a gallon.
here is a quick link to a site to figure your mpg with-

All PT Cruisers sold in the US have 2.4L DOHC non turbo and turbo 4 cylinder engines. If you are getting 220 out of a tank, that comes to 18.3 mpg, provided that you are running it bone dry but you don't do that. What you do is the next time you fill up, note the mileage and note the amount of gallons it took to fill up the vehicle. Start taking meticulous notes until you get a Scanguage for the vehicle.

ya i leave about 2 hours before i have to be somewhere if its out of town, and about an hour if it is in town. i always go 5 mph under the speed limit and the only time i pass someone usually is when they are going slower than i am (sorry have to laugh at that) and i knew i was getting bad mileage, thats why im trying to figure what i can do to clean out the egr system and also what i can do to get better mileage. i dont get gas again until the gas light comes on, unless im out of town then i get gas at a 1/4 tank. no i dont get 220 out of the entire tank, thats what i get when ive filled up in town on gas light, out of town at 1/4 tank.

I know you have made mention of the EGR system, did you get a code that says that the EGR function has been compromised in some way? Is the "check engine" light on? How many miles do you have on the vehicle? Some things, like the O2 sensors even if they don't trip the CEL will lose their sensitivity after a lot of miles and the mpg starts to suffer. Stop and go driving does not help the situation any.

yes there was a code for the egr valve, and the check engine light is still on. the valve itself and the hose that attaches to it have both been replaced and the engine light still comes on. i was told the egr system needs to be cleaned out. 164,xxxx on the car

When the light came back on, are you sure it isn't for another part of the system? Was the code cleared out after the valve was replaced? I am going to refer you over to here Allpar has Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth, and Jeep car, minivan, and truck information and you can look at the various tricks for dealing with Chrysler products. But my sense about your high mileage car is it's due for a tune up, O2 sensor replacement and a catalyst backpressure check just to get it back proper again.

the code was cleared and when it came back it was the same code that it gave before. i will look at the links youve provided, and hopefully get this situation taken care of. im tired of hearing the engine light beep when i start the car. how much is the tune up, 02 senser replacement and catalyst backpressure check usually cost? do i need to give an arm and a leg to get these items done?
