The space occupied by the air foil is a turbulent separation zone. Fill in the spac with a solid allows the air to travel the same path with out separating onto the low pressure

If I understand what your saying, it's about that plastic bubble the high school kids promoted. Your first example is a better one, the second one is double-ended and flattened instead of profiled.

I wasn't able to find the correct search terms, but I seem to recall a discussion that concluded that a half-round radius above the windshield (where the FURTHUR sign would go) would have the same effect, without the added frontal area.
