Which seems to point up the societal-level solution: not EVs for every commuter, but the realization that a great many people don't need to be physically in a certain place to do their jobs, so they don't need to commute.

I have a real job. Typing on a computer miles away doesn't fix electrical problems, align motor shafts or wet a broken part welded back together.
But it's only 4 or 6 miles away from where I live. No stop lights in between.

Hah, I have a fake job, which just started this week working from home providing remote software support.
Many jobs could at least be partially done from home. I'll be traveling 20% of the time.
BTW, I can get better fuel economy in stop and go PDX traffic in my Acura than the freeway MPG. Just drive the average speed of traffic, allowing a gap to form when it moves faster, and closing the gap when it's slower. People will move in and out of the gap, but it won't add more than 20 seconds to an hour long commute.
My Subie got 28 MPG, and probably would have done just about as well in stop and go traffic.

I can't think of a cheaper way to drive a car. .

You say I don't get it, I was just showing you a less expensive way. Leasing a new car is NEVER going to be the least expensive way based on nothing more then leasing a car requires you carry expensive full coverage insurance. I don't think you are ever going to get it.

AGAIN, the difference between full coverage and liability for me is $200 a year. ($600 vs $400 per year or $0.02 per mile) The State of Oregon requires every auto insurance policy sold in the state to cover liability, uninsured motorist, and PIP (medical insurance).

I have all those non-comp/collision coverages for $17 a month, I have bought insurance in Montana, Idaho, Washington, and California, although never Oregon. My coverage is also 3 times the minimum required. I have 2 poor, young, neices in Portland and I know they don't pay those rates on their old beaters. Also for stop and go crawl wouldn't an old Prius do just as good? Less sales tax there as well. I see nice $5000 10 year old Prius' all the time on the NW action sites and Craigslist.

Larger metros have higher insurance premiums due to increased likelihood of collision with other vehicles.
Oregon has zero sales tax. The price of the car is the price of the car.
My minimum liability policy in Oregon is $300/6 months to insure 2 cars and 1 truck for myself and my wife.

Each of us has particular needs and we base our purchases on average annual costs and cost per mile calculations. Include the value of your commuting time versus wage rate. This is the micro economic value system. Geography and climate may profoundly affect our cultural values. The net effect of burning fossil fuels is influenced by a number of factors including population density, land usage, heat efficiency, and cloud cover. Others may have very valid reasons for doing things differently.

$300 for 6 months for 3 cars is the same $17 a month for one car as I pay. Forgot OR no sales tax, we don't have sales tax here either, but a new car or an expensive car does have to pay a much higher registration then an older or less expensive car.
