The smaller rental companies are more likely to work with you. We had a Practicar franchise (Rent A Wreck), and the rules for what we could rent were a lot looser than with the big companies. My buddy still has ours, but man I just had no interest in dealing with the people not bringing cars back, having to repo cars from people that didn't pay, getting calls at 2 AM because some ditz locked the keys in her car, for the 2nd time, etc etc, or else I could help you out more. But I washed my hands of all that a while back so I really don't have any good rental hook ups I'm afraid. I can tell you that the sooner you make the reservation, the better. Rental companies make their money from April to September. So if you want something in that time frame, reserve it now.

Does everyone run a cable lock through all of the car keys. The woman kept explaining that it was so they could resell the car. My priorities changed from attempting to apply logic to trying to get her to stop repeating herself.

I have been to where rental companies sell their cars. Why can't they keep the remaining keys there?

We had 40 cars on the road, and we lost keys ourselves. Add in other staff, customers, and make it 400 cars - trust me they keep that cable there for a reason. Especially with newer cars that have expensive chip keys, and the remote fobs. The big rental companies that have stuff on lease have to return the car with both keys and remotes, figure it costs them $200 to replace one of the fobs on one car - if they lost the second fob on just 10% of their cars in a 400 car fleet, that's $8000 in fobs. And from my experience, just a 10% loss would be being generous.

That's $8000 after you pay to get the cars towed. Losing today's keys is expensive and time consuming.
