I wonder if it all has to do with where they're manufactured. In the US, Volkswagen group vehicles are.... well, the data speaks for itself.
Dashboard Light collects repair frequency from independent mechanics across the US. Here's where VAG ranks, based strictly off the data:

It might have more to do with adjusting the engines range to the degree of attention given (or neglected) to maintenance. No wonder Volkswagen couldn't get rid of naturally-aspirated engines as it intended to do within a timeframe of 15 to 20 years from 2003 on.

I haven't seen any Jetta Wagon TDI, not even with Argentinian or Uruguayan plates, even though some sedans made in Mexico had the TDI engine.

Hmm...
So it looks like the going price for a 2010 Prius right now is $7000. Which is wild considering i bought it for $7500 in 2016 with 90,000 miles and it currently has 193,000. There is a guy selling a "Sweet" 99 5s-fe camry with 50k miles.

I wouldn't mind seeing what his bottom dollar is. $6,000 is way too high but the clean factor of it is attractive. Might be a sweet deal for a couple grand less.
I messaged him and he said something along the lines of well if you are interested in it i will only negotiate in person.

The thinking with the camry is it pretty much guaranteed to be bullet-proof (think overall cost of ownership). If the Taliban could mount a turret to it I think they would. The gen 3 prius not so much.
I think an extra $50 of gas per month might be worth the reliability insurance, but yeah there isn't a lot of good options for sale right now. I'm just gonna think it out.

Changed the oil at 3000 miles in the Prius after swapping to 0w-40. 4.4 quarts in. Added 30oz of oil. 4 quarts came out. So it consumed 1.34 quarts over 3000 miles. So we are burning a quart every ~2300 miles.
Also, I unplugged the egr valve electrical connector and the knock dissappeared so the egr cooler does need to be cleaned.
Threw my first cel, but no limp mode and no change in mpg. Just instantly cleared up and runs like new again. (still getting 52-58mpg on average 54)
I'm thinking about just leaving the egr valve unplugged to give this car the egr delete that every gen 3 prius deserves.
