roof shingle for air damn?

Greetings,

I had to replace a few shingles on my roof. I only needed like 2 of them, but they come in 50 packs. Anyway, I was thinking of using some to make an air dam. They are about 1/4 inch thick, and they are waterproof. I would attach them with screw and/or pop rivets.

Each one is about 12 inches wide and 3 feet long. I was thinking of cutting one in half length wise and attaching them end to end, with another half cut riveted to the back side to help hold them together.

Any thoughts on using these for an air dam, front lip, and/or tire spat?

There is no real structural reinforcement to a roofing shingle. As the material heats up, it will git weaker. As it gits cooler, it will become more brittle. I don't think roofing shingles would be a good choice fer an air dam, front lip, or wheel spat.

Just an invitation for some kid to kick it or some drunk to back into it. If it at all looks vulnerable or prone to damage someone will test it, just for kicks.

Everyone in the world will be out to teach you a lesson for your own good and demonstrate the error of your ways to you.

It's one of the darkest aspects of human nature I'm afraid.

I call it the "six year old boy syndrome", will it break or not...........let's give it a try.

shingle

I agree with the others that they might not be such a good choice.
While fiberglass reinforced, the asphalt matrix is almost granular. It has little tolerance for tension,is prone to tearing, and 'creeps' when heated.
The material is also kind of heavy and it's dead weight would always challenge any fastener attempting to hold it.
And without some sort of structure like lawn edging has, built into it,it would likely deform in the airstream and not rebound once the aerodynamic load was relaxed.A ground strike on a driveway ramp might destroy it in compression, buckling and tearing it.
If it could be done in a continuous curve it might survive for a while.Hard to say.
Curiosity might kick in?

That'll fail in fairly short order.

Go to Tractor Supply and get some baler belting. Similar texture, genuinely sturdy. Or Home Depot for some lawn edging, super cheap and tough enough.
