Sarcasm: I just wanted to say thank you very much, Frank, for making gas a little more affordable for the little guy Now I'm going out and wash my car so it will rain on the garden this week. /Sarcasm
Redpoint5, I used to ride my bike until I figured out it wasn't worth the risk of snapping my recumbant in half (50Lbs over weight max) for $.80 saved on gas. I do need to do more cardio. Thats what stairs are for, I guess.

2 years ago I was living in cheap-ass mode, and I was able to spend under 250 a month total on everything minus rent. I've upgraded my lifestyle since (eat basically whatever I want) and I still burn through less than 16k a year including super expensive rent here in the Bay. I think 16k is what you take home if you work an $8/hour job, more or less.

OT, but this reminds me of the false assertion of some people that say that the minimum wage in the U.S. isn't a "living wage", or that we should even have a minimum wage at all. How dare the government tell me what is the least amount I can agree to trade my labor for. It's no less outrageous than saying that $15/hr is the maximum wage.

I agree with part of your minimum wage talk, that there shouldn't be one. I disagree that with the current one, that you can live on it. Well maybe if you then add welfair on top of it. But it really depends on where you live. Lots of the world may get by on less but they don't have the high cost of housing and food some areas here do.

Many years ago I pared down my fixed expenses to $6/day; currently $7/day due to nasty increases in utility service fees.
Sure takes the pressure off the income side of things.
I believe many people could approach my level of thrift if they so chose... but they'd rather whine. It does require some discipline and skill.

The problem is those 'Jonses' everyone is trying to keep up with. The hippys were right.

Apparently you don't have a wife or kids. Not that there's anything wrong with the single life - but obviously not everyone can get by on $7 per day, nor does everyone want to lead as spartan a life as you do.
Having a family also requires some discipline and skill. Different strokes for different folks...

Paying the price for spawning was a major driving force towards thrift. You and your assumptions.

I agree, gas is cheap. Luckily I get paid mileage for work, so all my driving is free plus I make almost enough from reinbursment to cover the payments.
My motivation is making more profit from driving by using less. ($/mile)
