For a little perspective: Gasoline and diesel usage and pricing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2010 Venezuela, one paid US$0.06/gal.

When I was working at a gas station in college, the owner claimed he couldn't pump water for less that what he charged for gas (~30¢/gal). I checked my receipts for the last two tanks. $5.29 and $4.99 per gallon, in Coburg and Lincoln, OR, respectively. 30¢ and about 90 miles difference. The noise in the [price] signal is greater than what I paid back then.

Isn't the country that invented the OPEC cartel wonderful? But who would want to live in Venezuela or any of the other OPEC nations?

Interesting link. Here's another.

Higher gas prices hurt the poor and middle class the most. It ends up being a drop in the bucket to the rich. Also the rich don't have to drive as much as they can afford the higher real estate prices closer to the places they work. The "help" can't afford to live in those communities and often have to come in from 20-30 miles away.

I feel you, I was driving 38 miles each way, but I got lucky with a job that's 5 miles away. But it's minimum wage. Not even enough to live on by myself.

In the azores it's preety much the same as in continental Portugal, shipping costs are higher but because of that they have lower taxes.

I assure you that minimum wage is enough to live on by yourself. Not that you would want to, but most of the rest of the world lives on less. I've lived on much less just for the fun of seeing how much of my paycheck I could bank. Of course, I didn't have a girlfriend at the time, so I didn't have to impress anyone.

OT, but this reminds me of the false assertion of some people that say that the minimum wage in the U.S. isn't a "living wage", or that we should even have a minimum wage at all. How dare the government tell me what is the least amount I can agree to trade my labor for. It's no less outrageous than saying that $15/hr is the maximum wage.
