AFAIK the 3.56 was only used on 4 speed manual transmissions.

I'm probably mistaken, then. I would like taller gearing, but a clutch is already pretty expensive, so hopefully I can make the stock one last. It is *not* particularly strong; but then other than bump starting, it gets quite gentle treatment...

I drive an xA and have seen Neil's car a few times -- I thought it was the weirdest looking thing -- kind of reminded me of a Citroen! Then, yesterday I was behind him and saw his window sticker with the ecomodder.com site. I have been poking around the site. Great stuff in here!! With no mods at all, I average about 37 MPG. Now I'm inspired to try and push that up! Thanks.

My year round average was 37MPG as well, before I did any ecomods, or learned some new ecodriving techniques. My highest tank was 42.5mpg. This year my worst tank during January was 42.5, and my current best tank is 55.3MPG.
Do you have an automatic? The grill block was good for about 3-4mpg alone. A quicker warm up also means you can get the engine off of the enriched cycle more quickly.
The first thing I recommend is getting an UltraGuage or ScanGuage. The instant feedback on what you are doing with your right foot is invaluable.

And welcome from a (big cousin, and less aerodynamic) xB owner. We share the same drivetrain - 1NZ-FE engine and C50 (if talking MTs) transmissions.

Question re: scangauge setting for xA
I just got the scangauge. The xA's fuel tank is 11.9 gallons -- should I set the scangauge to 11 or 12 ?

Hi Deb,
I would use 12. When you fill up, try to do at least the first 4 or 6 times at the same pump (with a level parking spot) and adjust fill amount. This will fine tune it.
The other key thing to do is to calibrate the "Speed" setting. It is best to do this with either a GPS, or on a highway with measured miles every 1/10th of a mile. I use the Trip B odometer and zero it as I pass a 10/20/30/40 mile marker, and then drive at least 30 miles. When you pass the +30 miles marker, not the exact distance registered on your Trip B odometer. Then do the math to figure out the percentage of increase (or decrease) needed to get the ScanGauge to register within a few 10ths of a mile. This will make the fuel economy number be much closer to the actual MPG per tank.
And you can see in my fuel log that I use this percentage correction when I enter the distance traveled for each tank.

I'm confused! I don't understand this part: "zero it as I pass a 10/20/30/40 mile marker." Drive 10 miles and zero it, another 10 and zero again...? And then drive another 30? Or did you mean tenths of miles and zero and then drive 30? Either way, why am I zeroing it out?
Thanks!
-Deb
