Vekke, everything sounds great.

.... except the CAT removal! Why why why. Environmental cost is not worth the 2 mpg!

Agreed. It's interesting seeing something a little different from the usual Civics etc... but I like to think that reducing fuel consumption goes hand in hand with reducing environmental impact, so gaining only small increases in fuel efficiency at the cost of the car being cleaner isn't a path I'm too keen on...

Is a old clogged catalysator a planet saver? If the diesel starts to be 10 years old the catalysator is not in the best shape it could be. Mine was just clogged but it could be already broken so that the metal mesh is stopping the gases to go by. This happens usually if you have hit the catalysator to something or it starts be old and badly worn out. So my decision was to take it off.

MPG reading is coming up!.

- Lighter aluminium wheels are in place in front and in back of the car.
- Lighter glassfibre hubcaps are in place. Attached by zipties .
- Tinted my windows
- Installed lowering springs

Best tank so far is my last tank.
2009-06-29 843.8 mi. 11.81 US gal MPG71.45 US

100% trip. avg speed 84 km/h. Could ave hit 3l/100km mark but rushed 80 km at speed of 77 mph. That rose my tank consumtion from 3.0 to 3.2! So keep steady max speed limit if you want good looking mpg figures. I could have hit easily 1000 miles but filled up in my usual station.

- Installed lowering springs in the midle of the tank.

Results:

- best coastdown test end speed 77km/h (+1km/h).
- best 75km "test leg" consumption from 2.7 l/100 km to 2.6l. Also that route average speed was highest of so far 80 km/h. So I see best mpg figures with higher speeds .

Next mods:

- install my almost ready glasfibre hood. ~6kg +aero effect on wipers
- new more tear drop shaped front bumber with wire controlled grill block ~3kg
- flat undertray
- Side skirts
- more weigth savings

Next target:

Try to keep the tank consumtion under 3.5l/100km.

Made a miscalculation in the miles to gallons translation and tank was 5.8 miles short of 1000 miles :/. However longest tank so far, but I had my brother in the car and he didn't like the run out of fuel idea so I had to fill up at 1600 kilometers mark. SG showed 75 more kilometers left and needle weren't even close to empty. 180 km:s light on were enough for my brother.

The 98 Cordoba was a PD? I thought it had a rotary pump. What advantages do PD engine have? They often get early cam wear.

98 polo is basically the same car as the cordoba... Exhaust pipe is self made/welded. Now I get 3.3 litres/100km consumtion if I drive speeds under 110 km/h.

Rob in petrol car the exhaust noise will rise much more than in diesel if you delete your rear muffler. The turbo works as a muffler and reduces the exhaust noises pretty much.

What comes to the cams, they dont wear if you use right oil and change it regularly :/.

At the moment I am disapointed that I havent got any time to do mods in my car at last one and a half month. Next week I will try to finish my glassfibre hood.
