Agreed there needs to be a safety net for those students who's parents can not/will not pay for their education. I want to see the whole mess decoupled from property taxes, as there is NO LINK WHATSOEVER between property ownership and one's obligation to school funding. However there is a strong, direct link between how many kids one has and the demand that creates for education.

You see, 150 years ago when this system was gelling, there was no income tax. Perhaps barter was so pervasive- or for whatever reason income couldn't be counted on- that property taxes made the most sense. That was then and this is now.

We got income tax to fight the French (a worthwhile cause I'm sure). How did you get it in the colonies ?

(of course the French helped you... but thats another debate )

Every instance of major tax revision (usually jumps ) was for war financing. Lovely. Now that we are in a constant state of war on this and war on that, I suppose we can expect taxes to never go down.

Well the poor don't pay any income tax either, so that's not going to cover it.

We have a phone tax here to pay for giving poor people free cell phones. Go figure.

The daylight robbery tax also paid for wars.

We aren't at war any more, partly due to Blair being gone and partly due to the fact that we have to rely on the French (remember the tax above ?) having to lend us aircraft carriers.

That can be remedied. Take away the child credit and dependent credits.

Frank has a point (although thoroughly beaten to death). If you allow govt to subsidize a certain behaviour then you can virtually guarantee that behaviour will multiply exponentially.

Maybe when there is nothing but poverty they will understand their mistake.

Penalized success and subsidized failure will never work. Neither will $7.65 an hour to unload Wal Mart trucks in the middle of the night.

regards
Mech
