Those moments the key is not in the on position are when there can be issues. I don't judge others, as I have driven, pulled my key out, reached my lock box, opened it, and put the key back in and ON- so no judgment, but learning how easy a KS is for a dope like me, EOC is so much safer and better. Keep all safety, and don't lose any miles.
The risk is what can happen in that moment. Driving to GGP2014, a possum ran into the road in front of me. My navigator wasn't buckled in, and was repositiong, and I thought he busted his head open from the swift natural reaction. Had I been keying off then, I could have locked the wheel, and who knows. What if it was a deer?
Is it LIKELY? No. Is it entirely possible? Absolutely. The thing is, IF it happens, it will be bad. Will the seat belt lock?Air bags? Onstar? Any other things working in the background I don't even realize? I don't plan my life to live in the 99%, I plan to survive the 1%. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. But that's me.

Mrs A used to roll her eyes and let me get on with it.
Now she tries to beat my instrumental MPGs instead, and does quite a few times - on our recent holiday she managed 75 MPH / 61 MPG in the Passat on one stretch which was impressive.

I generally don't do much hypermiling with passengers, other than driving a tad slower.
One day I accidentally started coasting (engine on) with my dad in the car.
"I used to drive like that in the 50s to save gas when using my dad's car ..."
Remember, that was only 10 years after WW2 and the 50s weren't as fabulous for everyone, everywhere.

Way back when, before the 1974 gas shortage, I had some friends who were equally poor. Most of them drove around with gas tanks near empty, so it was easy for them get the rest to pay up gas money when going on a trip. I kept my gas tank full, so getting gas money was a little harder.
We were 150 miles from home one day and I still had well over a half tank of gas. I asked for gas money. Dead silence. So I started driving 45 MPH in a 65 limit. The conversation went something like this:
Why are you driving so slow?
You don't want to pay gas money, so I'm driving for gas mileage.
What will it take to get you to speed up?
(Holds out hand, palm up)
How much do you want?
How fast do you want to go?
(Money starts dropping into hand)
I ended up at 80 MPH for the trip back.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from, but...I'm still not seeing how keying off is an unacceptable risk while other things, like your passenger not wearing a seatbelt in a moving car, or the possibility of being t-boned by a drunk driver, or rear-ended at a stoplight by an ignorant texter, or fiddling with the radio, or changing a tire on the side of a busy road, or myriad other things that can and do distract us and go wrong with our cars, other cars, and other drivers, and which are all so routine we tend not to give them a moment's thought when we start up our cars, are all acceptable risks.
Of course there's risk there--there's risk in anything. But in context, that risk seems, to me at least, to be pretty darn small.

Even battle hardened hypermilers have a tough time going 45mph, guilt-free on a freeway. You ARE tough!

Well, it happened today. I had EOC just before crest of a hill. The car slowed down to 20mph and my 87y/o mom asked me why I was driving SO slowly. She said, "Come on, honey. Speed up."
