Either this, or large retail chains stockpile enough of some items when their cost is lower due to favorable exchange rates for instance.

That kind of thing worked in the old days but today most people are going to at least look at something online even if they end up buying it at a physical store. People can see the prices of 10 stores side by side and that 80% off sale no longer looks like a sale.
|
Most often I still prefer to buy at a physical store, if I am in a hurry to get the item, yet looking for prices online can be helpful too.

I live in a town where many things can't be bought locally, meaning a 30 minute trip to the city. The other day my friend asked where to get shoes for his daughter because she got her 1 pair wet while camping. I thought for a while and said maybe Goodwill. The only other place the farm store, and they'd just have boots.
Amazon has most things available, delivered the next day. Some things can even be delivered same day for an extra fee.
The used bookstore has come in handy in a town like mine where you'd either need to spend an hour driving plus the time to shop, or just have things delivered to the doorstep.

Most of the actually decent deals on things I have bought were never available online let alone at anywhere near the same price.
My main issue is that “clearance prices” seem to be far above what I normally pay.
If I do search for clearance online the price never matches my local store or the product had not been in stock for months

The future of retail goods is mostly not brick and mortar. Only thing I want from Target is the highest quality diapers in the size I need them at the lowest price. Don't want to window shop for that, I just want a used book store to bring them to my door. Now Amazon has a diaper brand that competes with Target on every level.

I tried to buy a beer at a booth in Riverfront Park, but they declined my proffer of cash. - Their price was denominated in dollars
- My bills state "This note is legal tender, for all debts public and private"
So I asked if they accept Bitcoin and they said no. I said "That's the only reason I don't use it" and walked away beerlessly.

Many times I have fallen victim to the day-old rack at a grocery store.
Oh no, the price is great, but they make me fat!
I rarely see anything on the rack at Safeway anymore and when I stop at the Basha's half an hour away they now slice their prices 10%!
They are still kind of high, but what am I going to do, buy Walmart?!
Maybe.
We just ate a box of Entenmann's.
Mom hid them from my brother and they got stale.
Dipping them in milk just made them hard and wet.

The Safeway app has great deals, which I expect to become very mediocre once they achieve their targets for training their customers to use the app. 5 cent mangos, 10 cent corn on the cob... they pick the order and substitute better stuff if they don't have exactly what you want. Then they bring all the bags of groceries to the car in a couple minutes. Suckers go to the grocery store hungry, and then pick items off the shelf.
We're approaching the Golden Age. It's silly how much time is wasted handling food dozens of times before it goes in my belly.
As an aside, food doesn't make people fat, just like my car doesn't get into a wreck. The entities with agency direct the entities that don't have agency, and the results of those decisions are manifest.

As an aside to your aside, one of the best book I've ever read was Operators and Things

Operators and Things: The Inner Life of a Schizophrenic - Goodreads
OPERATORS AND THINGS: THE INNER LIFE OF A SCHIZOPHRENIC by Barbara O'Brien (not her real name) is an insider's view of madness. There have been others who have tried to capture their mental break in words, but most are paranoid, disjointed and, well, crazy. O'Brien is different.

Operators and Things | Silver Birch Press
Operators and Things | Silver Birch Press OPERATORS AND THINGS by Barbara O'Brien Reissue of the 1958 classic true story of a woman's descent into schizophrenia and her journey back to sanity. "O'Brien has produced a work of brilliance and power, evoking a combination of Kafka and Joyce, with a touch of Orwell." Robert R. Kirsch, Los Angeles Times

Her world consisted of those who put invisible hooks in the backs of the recievers of their operant conditioning. Operators and their [NPC] things.
One amazing scene was when the voices in her head told her exactly what to do in order to walk out of a jail. Then they cured her and left.

When I was a kid there was a bread store (packaged stuff) all I ate was the so called 33cent day old bread.
Imagine a store now that only sells bread?
