I finally got my 2001 TDI Beetle starting and running after messing with the injector pump since January. Seems I had the quality adjustment off. Bought ithe car for $900, not running owner said it needed an injector pump, $1000. Resealed it for $30. It wouldnt start. But today I tryed different static settings and it started. California car no rust. 173k miles. Running great now.

Feels like driving a garage against the wind compared to the aeromodded Saturn SC1.

Made my first mod, EGR block.

Hey Tony, good to see you got your lil' "stink bug" up and runnin'. I sure love mine. I have a 00'. I switched to all light weight synthetics, LRR tires/steelies and a K+N filter. I average 49mpg on the freeway on long hauls and only 45mpg in the winters. Sure is fun to squeeze the "smiles" out of a tank though isn't it! My best is 710 to a tank. Mike :{)

What weight engine oil do you use? The best I got in the Saturn was 610 miles, 12 gal tank.

It's probably too late to help, but here's a video for you. Apparently biodiesel swells seals and maybe it would've stopped your leak. Are you tempted to run biodiesel? I hear it can be made for $1/gallon.

Automatic or manual trans? I bought a 98 manual and got 47 mpg any way I drove it using Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck oil. That, my friend, was a very good deal you made for that car! A lot to like about the diesel beetles.

Except the engine compartment is a nightmare to work in vs the MKIV Jetta/Golfs.

I had an 03 Golf, 5 speed. It would get a consistent 45mpg and I did zero hypermiling. Loved that car. 600+ mile tanks are EASY once you delete the fuel filler vent *meant for gasoline* and let the fuel tank hold it's true potential.

I had several 700+mile tanks in that car.

The ALH *imo* is the best TDi. Simple, reliable, efficient and if you stay on top of timing belts will run forever.


If you don't already have it I recommend Rosstech Vagcom highly. Without it trying to set your injector pump timing is a guessing game. There's a whole bunch more it does besides just that.

Nice! Good to see another TDI on here. X2 the fill neck mod. Lets you fill at least another gallon and it is easier to get consistent fill-ups IMO. Diesel foams in the filler neck and it is hard to tell when it is really full. You can also hold the nozzle against the button as you fill but why not just pop it out? I would also recommend a FrostHeater, especially if you have to park outside. It speeds warm-up times which is good for mpg but also makes starting easier. These diesels don't make heat very quickly untill you put a load on them.
