I received an email from NASA informing of a Mars landing Thursday the 18th. Commentary begins at 11:15am PST.
This might be the mission that includes a bonus helicopter. I wish we could get video from mars, as we would see it, including sound.

Why does it make more sense to live on Mars, instead of Antartica or under the sea ?

Hedge against catastrophe. You never quite know until you try. Also, it's hard.

Mars has good bars.

Diemos, in particular, is a gateway to the outer Solar System. ...and Iapetus in particular.

If a cosmic collision wipes out life on Earth, Antarctica and the ocean bottom may not run free.
It is way easier to launch rockets from Mars than from Earth. To the point that it makes sense to build satellites on Mars even if they are to be launched towards and used around Earth.

I think going to Mars is going to have huge benefits to Earth, eventually. Overpopulation? Pollution? High unemployment? Ship to Mars!
There will be plenty of work and opportunity to terraform the planet however you please there.

EDIT: Dang, I need to read my email more closeley. NEXT Thursday, the 18th. Hah, I even posted the correct date above, it just didn't compute at the time.
Who all is watching live now?
... not digging the GW preaching. What has that to do with Mars landing?
EDIT: Just looked up terraforming Mars, and it turns out if we converted all trapped sources of CO2 and water, we would end up bringing Mars air density up from 1% of Earth, to 7%.
https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/g...-terraforming/
"Current conditions in the Martian atmosphere, at less than 1 kPa (0.15 psi) of atmospheric pressure, are significantly below the Armstrong limit of 6 kPa (0.87 psi) where very low pressure causes exposed bodily liquids such as saliva, tears, and the liquids wetting the alveoli within the lungs to boil away. Without a pressure suit, no amount of breathable oxygen delivered by any means will sustain oxygen-breathing life for more than a few minutes.[20][21] In the NASA technical report Rapid (Explosive) Decompression Emergencies in Pressure-Suited Subjects, after exposure to pressure below the Armstrong limit, a survivor reported that his "last conscious memory was of the water on his tongue beginning to boil".[21] In these conditions humans die within minutes unless a pressure suit provides life support.
If Mars' atmospheric pressure could rise above 19 kPa (2.8 psi), then a pressure suit would not be required. Visitors would only need to wear a mask that supplied 100% oxygen under positive pressure. A further increase to 24 kPa (3.5 psi) of atmospheric pressure would allow a simple mask supplying pure oxygen.[22][clarification needed] This might look similar to mountain climbers who venture into pressures below 37 kPa (5.4 psi), also called the death zone, where an insufficient amount of bottled oxygen has often resulted in hypoxia with fatalities.[23] However, if the increase in atmospheric pressure was achieved by increasing CO2 (or other toxic gas) the mask would have to ensure the external atmosphere did not enter the breathing apparatus. CO2 concentrations as low as 1% cause drowsiness in humans. Concentrations of 7% to 10% may cause suffocation, even in the presence of sufficient oxygen. (See Carbon dioxide toxicity.)"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraf...20over%20time.
We would need to crash a comet into Mars or something to get the material required to terraform. Either that, or we need to master converting atoms from one element to another in bulk, which would be extremely energy intensive. Probably easier to crash things into Mars.
Probably best to start crashing things into it now when we hardly have anything built up there.
My next question is how rapidly would solar wind blow the newly created atmosphere away?
1:30 PST Current chit-chat is garbage.
1:45 PST Doesn't the landing stick to a schedule? Rover was supposed to land at 1pm PST... is there a crater instead of a landing?
