Very cool!
I remember the tire fire in 1983... nasty.
I'd heard about the use of old tires in playground equipment, as a replacement for wood ground cover, and as an additive for asphalt, but did not realize how effective it was in reducing the prior stockpile of old tires... that is excellent news!!

My tire engineer friend is pretty adamant that tires cant be recycled into new tires, but thats ok because yokohama has replaced petroleum oil in their "Avid Ascend" tire line with orange oil, as in the oils extracted from disguard orange peels.
There is clearly a much bigger market for used tires now then there was 20 years ago.

Some states, AZ & CA are two that I know of, use ground-up tires mixed-in with asphalt for new highways...quieter running for sure!

I wonder if the increased resilience also increases rolling resistance?

It will be neat when we figure out how to make better use of the used tires. If they had value, people would be collecting them like scrap metal and recycling them instead of tossing them into streams.

I've also seen ground up tires used as mulch in playgrounds as well as the old "Earthship" houses and we use them as bullet traps at the local range.

A local community paved a section of a bicycle trail with an asphalt/rubber blend for a short period of time. You noticed it immediately when you hit it. It was like peddling through molasses. That section has since been repaved with regular asphalt.
I read a few months ago that some playgrounds were removing the recycled rubber mulch due to toxic chemicals leaching from the rubber.
