Type of heat shielding for pan under muffler?

Hey Guys,

Question;

When making a belly pan, heat shielding is important around the exhaust. This we all know. However, in looking at my pan idea/design, I was considering using simple foil tape used by HVAC guys to tape exhaust vent tubing on furnaces.

What are your thoughts on using this to protect Coroplast?

Matt

My thought is that foil is designed to reflect ultraviolet light before it can be converted to infrared and that the tape would eventually transfer heat to the plastic.
If you had an actual metal skin attached with standoffs, with a dead-air space in between,it would better shield the plastic.Like a double,or triple-wall stove pipe on a wood stove,or heat-shield under a catalytic converter.

I'd rather ceramic coat and then wrap the exhaust...

Matt,
how many threads have you researched?
after you have, then let's discuss what you have seen.

NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE has reported melting coroplast. ....wonder why?

Thanks for the input, guys.

I have been reading up on belly pans and all I seem to see in each thread is "Coroplast will deform from heat".

I would love to have an airspace between the heat shield and the pan, but there really isn't any room. Maybe I could manage 1/8 inch of space. Of course, any air space is good.

1. when deciding to do a belly pan you should look and see if you can seal it. That would mean you have clearance low enough below any exhuast.
2. when I did mine, I realized that the exhaust system was parallel with the pan so I cut the belly pan to go right up to the exhaust pipes. Then in the rear, I created a screen shield that would allow the heat to escape.

if you only have less than 1/8 of an inch, then why cover it and intentiionally create a heat problem?

for example: in my full body underbelly, IF I had enclosed the entire underbody would I have gained 1 more mpg? I really dont think so.
Proof? when I removed the center section after 1 1/2 yrs, I did not lose any mpg.

without a picture, it's hard to help you make your desicion, But I would NEVER close off the underbelly 100%.
Look at all the top of the line factory underbelly pans. I have the 2013 Audi A8 in my thread. They leave the exhaust exposed.

Again, the rear underbelly, which I used the screen material, was on the Q45 till I sold it.

here is how close the corplast is to the rear exhaust:[

you can see the exhaust on the far edge of this picture, see how close the coroplast is? how it was cut to follow the lines of the exhaust.

i used about 4 inches of fiberglass insulation for my full underbelly pan on a 93 festiva. so far no warping or melting issues
