Ah, OK. I didn' know about the 2nd episode.
I hope they made some disclaimers though, because the SAE study showed that, on average tailgate up is best, though the results varied depending on the cab/bed configuration.
I'll still quibble with their testing approach in this first vid (on-road, in traffic). Sounds like their second effort was more controlled.

Season 4
Episode 21
Edit: Also look for episode #64
This is where the tailgate myth is revisited. I wasn't able to track it down on a video site. It might be on a torrent site.
A mesh back was the most efficient on there tests.

Hmm...I wonder what kind of results they would get without a tailgate. I know my uncle's F-150 tailgate is at least 40+ lbs

IIRC, the tested that in the revisit - it wasn't beneficial. Bear in mind, they were testing steady state conditions - small changes in weight are nearly insignificant (you probably can't measure with DIY instrumentation) with respect to FE...

Glad I finally got to see that.
Can somebody please find the second episode?
I have a small pickup and am getting known as a fuel economy guy - I need to back some of this up!

No word on whaleback caps, either. Another thought: that tailgate is a nice, big flat surface...that would be great for attaching a teardrop tail.

I sometimes question their results though... With all the technology they have, it seems as though they always go the easier and more DIY way to do it.

I would agree with you, but they are out to be entertaining, not scientific. They do a decent job on some, and not so decent on others, but they always keep me watching more episodes.
