The XL1 uses electricity and diesel, so with electricity, you would save a *lot* more money, but save less with diesel.

It is not going to purchased to save money.

As already pointed, it's going to be a halo-car. But even a halo-car can have its reasonable side because they allow a better understandment about the practical effects of the technology they feature. Well, even the Prius could be considered a halo-car when it was released, and nowadays other Toyota models also feature its HSD driveline layout.

There seem to be many Prii around. It seems like XL1s will be rarer than Ferraris, but yes, there should be some trickle-down, and maybe many of us will eventually know someone who owns an XL5.

VTEC, for example, started as a feature for Formula 1 racing cars, and nowadays VVT is widespread even in cheap econoboxes. The same perspectives can be expected to the XL1, its aerodynamics, the usage of lightweight materials, and its driveline layout.

Just about the rarest car in Belgium is a Lada !

Rarity doesn't necessarily mean status

I think of it as the Bugatti Veyron of FE. VW pushed the limits of top speed (268), and are pushing the limits of top FE (262).

Supposedly is already being planned: VW Up hybrid to use XL1 tech | Autocar, VW to launch 95mpg Up | Autocar

I doubt we're going to see an up! diesel hybrid.

VW already have the CNG eco up.
The new e-up just launched - but that's costing about twice as much for only 1/4 to 1/3 the range.

Adding yet another - third ! - frugal model in the exact same car niche ...
I very much doubt it's going to work out or sell well.
They'd mostly cannibalise each other's sales.

Good point. Considering the math on the e-up, I think that the hybrid would make much more sense.

That could eventually justify a Diesel hybrid
