WAI in a Corolla

Has anyone done one of these in a 9th Gen Corolla (03-07)? While working on my permanenty upper grill block, I took a look at the intake.

Here's the intake opening, behind the headlight.

Here's the path the intake tubing takes: behind a panel behind the battery, under the battery, out towards the engine bay, then back away to behind the headlight.

It looks like I'd need to remove that piece that makes the 180 and turn it back in towards the engine compartment but there's no apparent easy way other than cutting it. I'd like to keep all my mods easily reversible if possible...

*edit* - yeah i realize the air flows the other way, but thats the way the tubing goes from the air cleaner to the intake hole.

I've got the 8th gen and I've been thinking about just punching a 2" hole in the back of the air box. If I decided to go back, I think I can use an electrical j-box knockout plug. (I think they make 2" plugs). The bottom of the air box, engine-side would pull some pretty warm air.

I have done this in my 8th gen corolla, 2002, it is a worthwhile mod because it removes the restriction in the intake section closest to the filter.

Ill post pictures tonight, don't have the time to post them this morning. Sorry to keep you waiting with baited breath...

I've thought about doing it a few times on the Matrix and would still like to. It looks like our engine bays are identical from your pics. I still haven't thought up a good way to do it yet though.

I know people have simply detached the "snorkel" from its mounting and re-routed the tube to (in this case) take in more cold air.

I dont see a problem re-routing it to a place for more warm air without having to cut anything.

Im not posaive but I think it is held in place by a couple of rivits.

The end, at least, is held in place by a plastic rivetty looking bit (just below the strap across the battery in the second pic). I don't know if there are others or how flexible the tubing is; it feels fairly solid but could be workable. I'll play with it next weekend if the rain they're predicting holds off.

Sorry about the delay. I was unable to get to my pics at home, so without further delay:

Top Down view into the air box. The screen is just 1/4" grid, and their is an inverted hose clamp pressing the grid against the opening (I'm quite proud of that ).

A side view from the outside of the air box. This helps keep the woodland creatures out of the air box .

As far as removing the snorkel, it's a snap. The plastic is flexible enough, but you have to remove the battery. The snorkel is attached under the battery tray and right near the headlight, but other than that it's just wedged in there. Important note, the intake will make a much more noticeable noise, not unpleasant, just a little louder than stock.

The engine bay of a 2002 Toyota Corolla S. Yes it's mine. No, I know it needs to be washed. And no, I don't recommend a K&N air filter unless you a racing.

So has anyone seen an improvement in their mpg with a WAI? I just added dryer vent pipe directed toward my exh. manifold, blocked off the stock vent, and it appears I've gained 5 mpg according to my scan gauge, on the same stretch of highway, same speed, etc. It's a dog when I punch the gas, though. Can anyone confirm similiar results?

Yes, I have seen about 2-3 MPG gain from this mod, it is easily reversable, and it also aids by shortening warmup time.

As far as it being a dog when you punch it, warm air does have a lower density therefore, lower horsepower, so it's not unreasonable to see a power drop. Hope that answers your questions.

Neat idea - I might need to do that sometime!
