I second the Echo recommendation. A Yaris would be a great choice as well if you come across a good deal.
I would recommend a Corolla, but only with a 5 speed manual. The auto Corolla is not a great fuel miser.

If my back stays the way it is right now, then a manual is out of the question. I can barely walk let alone push a clutch in when I do have to do the city driving. I believe 20 out of my 80 mile commute are city

Exercise. Move despite pain, and the pain lessens... Experience from a pulverized L5-S1 disc that intrudes into my spinal chord.

If you want simple, stay away from automatic transmissions.
Most insurance companies have been sending people to physical therapy instead of back surgery, because more often than not, it works (and is a whole lot cheaper).

thread title
When I saw this thread title (before I added the bits in brackets), I thought what I was going be reading about was someone had done the biggest "silver bullet" fuel-saving mod on their vehicle (eg. a boat tail) and wanted to know what to do next.
Bummer about the car, Baltothewolf. My brother just went through something similar - big headache. Hope you find something good.

Metro, if I ever do a full boat tail on one of my cars, I will call it a silver bullet just for you.

Baltothewolf, where is Apple Valley? I know there is one down by Los Angeles and one in like Minnesota or somewhere up north.

Sorry guys xD. I have been referring my car as the 'silver bullet' for so long I forgot to call it by its real name. Anyway, I think the car is done for. I took it out for a spin today and while idling and at 55mph there is a noticeable vibration that wasn't there before. That would mean the drive train is messed up right?
