I am pleased to report this place bears little resemblance to 4chan. If I had known this before I signed up, I probably would have used my irl name instead of the Robert Smalls pseudonym.
That name again is Matt Gates.

lol, indeed, but I like my anon name
and indeed enjoy my "i don't exist"
and I don't like people looking at my car making "hurr durr looks like ****"
maybe I should design a "makes 35% more mpgs than when it was pretty" sticker so they would leave me the f alone

my background is in jet engine mechanic, tinkering with cars, and some electronics repair. All courtesy of the Marine Corps. I don't do any of that now, but I still enjoy tinkering and fixing stuff.

IT "generalist" - I do a little bit of everything, although it's trending more towards databases as time goes on. I currently work in automotive manufacturing, although on the assembly end of things.
Four years ago, I bought a Toyota Yaris. Plain car, but it worked well and got me 40mpg on my 35 mile commute without any hypermiling techniques at all. Sadly, I lost it in a fire and drove a Caliber for a year. The CVT was neat but hard to control for fuel efficiency, and when it started to have trouble I traded it in for a Scion xA, the Yaris with a hatchback body. My first goal is to push up my average MPG past 40, then see where I can go from there. The Scion has a different final drive than the Yaris, more geared for sporty than efficient.

I work as a support technician for a local telecom. Basically, I take calls from our business customers and help solve their issues and help with fixing the bigger problems. We currently run copper, fiber, and wireless systems, and going to have everyone FTTH by 2012 while serving up internet, TV, and voice.
It's great to do my work.

Telecomms / IT support at a small local phone exchange and ISP.
I look after and take calls about our Internet services, install, service and maintain most of the services we provide. Leaning towards telephony but enjoy motor vehicles, and what one of my co-workers describes as "Squiggly-Amps", that being digital electronics.
I fix broken things in my spare time. Mostly my car.
