Just bought a bag of organic blue corn taco ships...way too much salt...but I went thru the whole bag. This was not the typical way-overpriced organic food either.

So what would happen if GMOs were labeled...you MIGHT be able to buy inexpensive non-GMO or organic foods.

Mexican Farmers Fear Losing Traditions, Livelihood As Monsanto Wins GMO Planting Rights

Writing about the effects of NAFTA, Roger Bybee and Carolyn Winter writing for Common Dreams say, “NAFTA was sold to the American public as the magic formula that would improve the American economy at the same time it would raise up the impoverished Mexican economy. The time has come to look at the failures of this type of trade agreement before we engage in more and lower the economic prospects of all workers affected.”

Continuing, Bybee and Winter contend, “NAFTA, by permitting heavily-subsidized U.S. corn and other agri-business products to compete with small Mexican farmers, has driven the Mexican farmer off the land due to low-priced imports of U.S. corn and other agricultural products. Some 2 million Mexicans have been forced out of agriculture, and many of those that remain are living in desperate poverty. These people are among those that cross the border to feed their families. Meanwhile, corn-based tortilla prices climbed by 50 percent. No wonder many so Mexican peasants have called NAFTA their ‘death warrant.’”

...

The new proposed legislation granting Monsanto increased access to corn production represents another U.S. intervention in Mexican corn production.

Monsanto and other multinational corporations continue to dictate legislation in Washington D.C. Monsanto spent $6.3 million lobbying in Washington D.C. last year, surpassing every agribusiness company except the tobacco company Altria.

...

The big plan? Use NAFTA to force US corn into Mexico...force farmers off the land...introduce GMO crops and industrial farming...control the seeds and production? Big profits?

Sounds like they are making some good food supplements....at least that's how I would see this entering the markets.

The avg food shopper just buys what's advertised? What has been designed to taste good?

I try to buy food that has been scientifically found to be healthful...taste and tradition come second. Very difficult in a food system that is drenched in pollutants and various over-refined "foods".

In theory at least. Following my tastes alone I'd probably live on burgers...pizza...and ice cream.

GMO food is poisen

GMO food is poison
if you really knew what it was and what it does

you would be angry
Shock findings in new GMO study: Rats fed lifetime of GM corn grow horrifying tumors, 70% of females die early

since most believe the mainstream media and the propaganda fed to you by your government
you continue to ingest poison which drives you to the

medical profession
where they sell you more poison which does not cure the effects of your diet but does deplete your bank account

just like a complex science fiction movie
too bad this is real -
and most of you do not have a clue that you are actors

I suggest you backread a few pages, where the study has been busted.

Otherwise... be glad you're not a specially bred laboratory rat that has a tumor-development rate of over 30% without GMOs.

Study was "busted"...but only in your mind? Still beats Monsanto's 90 day study...same rats...just more time....

Go back and read the SciAm critique of the study which shows the negative relation between higher levels of round-up and mortality (which should increase with increasing doses of the weedkiller if there is a positive co-relation). I can't be bothered to post the same things over and over... not like some people...

Sorry Monsanto: Govt Admits GM Bt Cotton Crops Fail 40% | NationofChange

The government of Maharashtra, a state in western India, has acknowledged for the first time that Bt cotton is a failure that will likely reduce yields by 40%, from 3.5 to 2.2 million quintal. The region’s cotton farmers will face about Rs6,000 crore, over 1 billion USD. Accumulated losses are to be even more staggering: Rs 20,000 crore, or about 3.6 billion USD, due to rising cultivation costs.

Faced with unbearable debt and health problems, the National Crime Records Bureau predicts that 5,000 farmers will have committed suicide by the end of the year, compared to last year’s 3,500. If you’re surprised by this number, know that Monsanto’s cost-inflated and ineffective seeds have been driving farmers to suicide for quite some time, and is considered to be one of the largest — if not the largest — cause of the quarter of a million farmer suicides over the past 16 years.

“The agrarian crisis sweeping through the state due to Bt cotton failure has only widened,” says Kishore Tiwari from the farm advocacy group Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti. “Unlike when cotton crop failure was reported only from Vidarbha and Marathawada, reports of such crop failure are now coming in from Khandesh in north Maharashtra, too.”

Government Role in GMOs

Maharashtra dedicates 4.2 million hectares to Bt cotton production, but has been reporting the lowest yield of 5 quintal per hectare since 2006. Tiwari adds that the number is likely to fall to 3 quintal this year, meaning “a net loss of more than Rs38,000 per hectare.”

Bt cotton has failed the region for three consecutive years. The Mahahrashtra state government compensated 4 million farmers Rs2,000 crore last year This year, even farmers with adequate irrigation are facing crop failure.
