Who else races?

A little side discussion with Mcrews got me thinking that I can't be the only one who races as well as goes for fuel efficiency. I know that Aerohead and a few other guys run at bonneville. I drag race (although mostly test and tune just for fun), and I also have autocrossed a few times, but again just for fun.

For drag racing I use my 1970 El Camino. 355" smallblock, sportsman 2 heads, voodoo 60102 (wimpy) cam, holley 3310 carb, no name headers, TRW hypereutectic pistons, 200-R4 trans, 3.73's in the rear end. Not fast or crazy by any means, but built within my budget on mostly used parts and still a ton of fun.

Here it is on an autocross course... Not quite as well set up for this... BODY ROLL But still outrageously fun. I mostly ran the Neon for autocross/ autoslalom runs though.

Who else here does some sort of racing?

Won the pickup truck class Green Grand Prix last April. Set the land speed record for class at Loring AFB Aug 2010 . 38% bump in fuel economy, 20% power gain. Drive it every day. Next project should add at least 15% to those #'s.

I love road racing my turbo Datsun 280Z at High Plains. I used to drag race it, ran high 12s up here in Denver.

Have done bracket racing with a '63 Nova, autocrossed a '72 Pantera, did quite well at time/distance rallies as a driver with past Datsun 510, even though had different navigator
each time.

Would love to do rallies again anywhere in the west on Sunday mornings. Currently, the only ones available are Friday nights which is out for me!

I used to drag race when I was growing up since my family owns/operates an IHRA sanctioned drag strip. Now that I've moved away and have a family of my own, it's difficult to do much.

I'm currently building (Slowly...) a car to run at Bonneville in the I/GC class. It was an open record when I started the project but was set a couple years ago. With a little luck I could set a higher record; it's currently at 144.612mph.

Won the 2012 SMCC Economy Run this year with Will as co-pilot (which, believe me, benefited from the application of "traditional" racing skills).

But I'm definitely not rich enough to afford "traditional" racing.

Years ago I spent a wee bag of money on performance/racing schools & lapping days before I figured that out.

I raced a 79 mazda rx7 in SCCA Showroom Stock SoloII in the early 80's.
Could believe I could have so much fun in a bone stock car.
Those little rotary engines got TERRIBLE gas mileage but MAN they could spin!!!!!!
Did that for 2 yrs then got married.

Now I try to save gas!!!!

I know what you mean about having fun for a stock car. That's where I love autocrossing, even with a bone stock, slow car, it is still a ton of fun! More technical skill opposed to power and equipment. I had so much fun doing that in the Neon even with the automatic transmission. Then the El Camino was MORE fun. Simply because it was a blast to try to run a school bus through a go kart track.
