I live in a major train traffic corridor, Amtrak, BNSF & UP and every so often a CSK. Rail Freight doesn't really have a tight schedule but Amtrak does. Rail freight had a couple day window for delivery.
THE Wide/oversize load experience I have: if it's over a certain width, length or weight, you need flashing lights and signs, then escorts and pretrip authorization/approval (sometimes in writing) from whoever owns the road the load goes on. Escorts are responsible for side road traffic and rail crossings and have cellphones or radio communication with someone who can stop side traffic. Really big oversize needs police/highway patrol escort who have radios and cell phones anymore and generally know whom to call.
Afaik, if you get centerpunched by a train, someone screwed up badly somewhere but not the load driver.
