There is also the possibility that whatever you are using to see FE is miscalibrated.
Sure, but there are other signs as well.

The fuel level meter works independent from the OBC.
Tank size is identical, but the needle is dropping slower than on my V50.
I got an extra 50-70 km before hitting the first 1/8 marker.

On CC, the fuel consumption doesn't shoot up as fast on an incline, and it doesn't get as high. Killing the CC uphill, it also responds far better to manual throttle application. Speed hardly drops, while FC remains constant on inclines where my V50 would either loose speed or increase FC.

The average is at 3.9 L/100km or 60mpg.
@ 100kph on the motorway, it's often indicating 75+ mpg

Estimated remaining range and distance driven combined, have indicated over 1600km / 1000 miles.

Quote:
The Scan Gauge may need a few tanks in the S40 to get used to it, while the onboard computers are far from accurate.
On my diesel, I feel the SG gets calibrated to my driving style, not to the car.
So I don't really use the scangauge to keep track of fuel economy.

The funny part:
The oil level on the replacement car is as high as on mine.
It already went through 2 DPF cycles, only 200km apart.
I only noticed them because I saw the intake temp increase on the SG.
On my V50 the process usually starts with a small jerk, just enough to notice something's up.

So either both cars have the same issues or these Volvo's can't take mild hypermiling.

Heh! When I worked at europcar (VW'S Car hire place), We uses to ensure each new car to the fleet recieved an "Italian Tuning" on the way to the car park- they were much faster after that.

Seriously though, regarding the s50 being so much better than the v50- it sounds extreme, but a back to back rolling road test may indicate differences?

Sounds like your car feels "lethargic" in comparison?

Could the injectors be clogged?

Mrs A was interested in a Pug 406 Coupe a few years ago, in Mint Green only. A HDi one came up at the local Arnold Clark (Seafield if you know it).

We went to have a look and as we did and the sales guy was going on about its condition, their warranty and how they take care of customers, a mechanic reversed a newly serviced 206 out of the bay doing over 30 going backwards, flicked it round on the handbrake and skid-parked in the "Service Only" spaces.

He then clanged the door on the car next to it as he got out and jogged back in whistling.

The salesman looked at us and said "I suppose you don't want it now ?"

Yup.

As it's a loaner, I can't compare them at the same time.

Lethargic is way exaggerated, but the difference could be felt switching from the V50 to the S40.
Having driven my V50 from new, it doesn't feel wrong though.
By comparison, my own car drives better when cold.

Is there a way these could be checked remotely ?

Physically checking them is out of the question.
It was 400 euro in labor alone to clean off the crud and replace a blown seal on 1, so I would rather not go there.

Get them to pay for the RR session- after all, its them that have failed to fix the issues so far!

I found this just now, checking out Vauxhalls for someone.

Quote:
With the 1.3CDTI (FIAT 1.25 Multijet) engine fitted with a diesel particulate filter, what can happen is that excess diesel fuel that was supposed to burn hotter and regenerate the dpf does not and instead seeps into the sump, gradually raising the level of sump oil to the point that the engine starts to run on it, cannot be stopped and therefore self-destructs. Vital to check sump oil level regularly.
Different engine, same problem though ?

Yes, that's the oil-dilution issue.
The biodiesel content in our regular diesel makes it even worse, as biodiesel doesn't burn as easily, so it gets into the oil more easily than regular diesel.

With the very frequent regenerations, oil dilution really becomes an issue.
That's why I want them to find the root cause.

Coming home from work, I couldn't resist filling up Snert, the replacement S40.
4.08 L/100km or 24.5 km/liter
57.66 mpg (US)
69.24 mpg (UK)

Instant Hypermiler status !

I wonder how common this is, still considering a non-diesel swap. But then again I like the oomph from the turbo.

I'm afraid it's very widespread.

Actually, the issue isn't that biodiesel doesn't BURN as easily. The issue is that biodiesel doesn't EVAPORATE as easily. You get more or less the same amount of oil INTO the oil. The issue is that quite a bit of conventional diesel will evanporate out on it's own, biodiesel won't go OUT of the oil.
