Good points, Tas. Also, we don't know how fast they were driving. They normally post those stats on their web site after doing a trip, but omitted them for the US journey.

This nothing to do with a Metro.

Please note I did not introduce the Metro into this conversation.

In any case, the rules require that the car be less than 6 months old.

If the claim was for Non-Hybrid or Diesel power then fair enough but to claim against all current production is just plain BS as has been proven almost immediately.

Let us also not forget the vastly superior route planning (within the rules stated) of the second attempt also.

One area where the VW crew with their "26 years of experience" should have prospered.

Too bad they did not follow all stated rules. Their record might not count.

I believe the TDI record was more a publicity stunt than the ultimate attempt to beat the previous record. VW had a new car to sell that could beat the previous record at a time when fuel economy was important to the masses.

A record just mean that it's been set, not that there's nothing out there that can beat it. The previous record was 51 mpg with a crx some years back. There have been the Insight since then that could have set the bar incredibly high, yet no one went for the record with this car.

Well, the Taylors are at it again. They set a new record at 67.9 mpg, still with a new TDI.

Looks like Cleanmpg's 68.54 mpg record didn't get homologated after all...

Wait, I don't understand. If the CleanMPG people got 68mpg and this additional TDI run got 67mpg, how did they get the record (since 67 < 68)?

Probably because CleanMPG never really had the record. It looks like Guiness never homologated it for whatever reason. I can theorize about a clear packaging tape grill block.
