That's the kind of swap you do when you want the inside space of a bigger car, but better FE. In a couple years from now, I would love to swap my 2.0 for the 1.6 from an accent and throw a small turbo in there.

Its not a bad idea IMO. A guy on genvibe asked about this and got his arse flamed off almost. Of course I piped in and corrected many's incorrect ideas. They said he'd get worse mileage cause the motor would have to work 'too hard'.
The downside would be that the mounts probably don't line up and it would be a lot of work. Cost may be close to a wash after selling the parts. I'd really like to see what kind of results you'd get with it. Anyone got the numbers for the overseas duplicate compared with the 1.8?

The info I posted above says 40.5 mpg for the 1.8L and 43 mpg (not sure which gallon) for the 1.5L. This is for the tenth gen chunky rolla, so I'd expect results for the 9th gen to be better.

If it was me, I'd do it the other way around and put the 1.8 Corolla motor in the Yaris. The extra power available would be nice and the FE would be better with a ~500 lb. lighter vehicle.

Weight is much less of a factor at highway speeds than you might think. Weight effects city driving mostly. The 1ZZ in a Yaris wouldn't be going the right way.

That's true, but it still has some effect on the highway. Why else would the 10th gens have a reduced highway rating? The vehicle weight affects the tire resistance at a given air pressure. I'll gladly take the city MPGs though.

I suppose. It would depend on the kind of driving JohnnyGrey is going to be doing. For me, I get a lot of mixed stop & go so the lighter vehicle would work to my favor. Also, if he (I'm assuming) is looking for the larger vehicle size then that'd also work to the 1.5 in a Corolla.
And here's the latest '08 model specs from toyota.com:
1.5 L Yaris - 29/36 MPG
106 HP @ 6000 RPM
103 ft/lb @ 4200 RPM
2293 lbs. curb weight
1.8 L Corolla - 26/35 MPG
132 HP @ 6000 RPM
128 ft/lb @ 4400 RPM
2723 lbs. curb

You can buy a used Echo with the 1nz you seek for less than $4000 now, I don't understand why you want to make this so difficult. I would even go as far to assume that the long blocks are within 50 lbs. of each other.
So custom axles, custom shift linkage, custom motor mounts, no working electronics, and immediately devaluing the project vehicle. I've got to ask, at what cost?

Why would I need custom anything? Toyota puts the 1NZ into the Corolla on a regular basis, just not in the US. I don't need to replace the transmission so that means same axles, same shift linkage, and maybe a different (factory) motor mount than the 1ZZ.
An echo is an all around cheap car. This is what I was complaining about earlier, the fact that automakers think cheap and fuel efficient should always go together. Why can't a nicer car be fuel efficient? Why can't I find something with leather seats that gets more than 40mpg hwy? Just because I shell out for leather doesn't mean I want to shell out for gas!
I want to drive something that doesn't look like a joke, that's pretty decent on the inside, that doesn't have the instrument cluster in the middle of the car, something that has a tachometer for god's sake! Why does Toyota give this option to the Japanese and not us? Probably because it would hurt more profitable Prius sales.

Roflwaffle already hit on it.
In most countries you are taxed on displacement and/or size of the car. So that is why kei cars are so popular in Asia.
If you want leather interior go to an upholsterer and pay for it.
It could cut into Prius sells, but car companies make cars they know will sell. So in that effort they cater to the masses, not niche customers. They are trying to undo the image that Japanese cars are weak and torqueless.
Center mount tachs are for factory line efficiency.
Go ahead an import the OEM components, but I am more than confident having them custom fabricated would ultimately be cheaper.
