Not to brag, but I had one before, too - taking buying the Insight as the start of hypermiling. I've always done a lot of what would be considered hypermiling, such as driving smoothly, anticipating lights, etc. Nor do I always hypermile now, as when I find an (increasingly rare) nice stretch of twisty mountain road. (I just don't find much enjoyment in driving fast on the straight & flat.) And I've always been pretty good at not getting caught :-)

I'll have to hypermile another 25 years to do a true comparison. But since I'll be about 90 years old then, it won't be a fair comparison.

luvit -
I had a clean record before starting this, and was getting an average 30+ MPG without trying. I was already a pretty tame driver. I would practice "limo mode" to see how smooth I could drive, and was taught by my Dad to slow down in advance of red lights in hopes of catching the green and conserving momentum.

I hypermile when I can get away with it. Lately though, I've been warned for 'impeding traffic' a few times...by going just THREE MILLES BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT.
You'd think cops of all people, would know better. But if your average yahoo decides to cruise a 65MPH at 80MPH or so i'm not allowed to do 62...go figure.

My crazy days ended with a 120mph 2wd subaru at 1781cc..
that was october 2006. Realizing I was at the fast end of ecomodding, I simply slowed down. "No one will catch the 3 main boxer no matter the realm it is in."
Inspiration..epiphany... I have been lurking here randomly since then.
I too have no warnings, no speeding, nothing... starting with respect for consumption.
A little bit can go a looong way...without the pansy bs'er.

Got 1 ticket while driving normally. 39mph in a 35 in a 5 lane empty road.
While hypermiling, I've gotten a 750$ charge in Georgia against me for not moving over. (Was doing 55 in a 70, couldn't get over in time and the cop had plenty of room. Was talked down to 350 and not sending it to the DMV)
So I guess I was doing better ticket/insurance wise just staying with everyone else.

As of now i have a clean record, and i plan to keep it that way with the help of hypermiling. Even before hypermiling when i used to speed, somehow i never got caught doing it. I have been pulled over before though. Once a long time ago cuz my rear license plate was missing due to the fact that it was stolen out of my work parking lot. I've also been pulled for illegal tint while in NC which i fixed a week later, and a warning for running a red light. All of this was way before hypermiling.

That surprises me. As long as your keep to the right you should have no problem. When i was stationed in NC, constantly i saw people just sit in the left lane going under the psl or sit next to someone in the right lane so no one could get around. As long as i was there, i never saw anyone get pulled for doing that stuff.

I was a lead footed driver before.
Lost my license several times for moving violations.
NPD - Excuse me sir, did you know you ran a stop sign?
Me - I don't believe I ran the sign officer, I thought I came to a stop.
NPD - No sir, all of your wheels did not come to a complete stop.
Me - ?!Really?! Which one didn't stop?
Since I began HyperMiling, (4? 5? years back) I have had only one incident.
My fault.
I got in a hurry,
driving someone else car,
44 in a 35
$178 later I'm headed back to being citation-less for five years.

...uh, just "...for the record..." a clean record does not necessarily mean "safe driver," but rather something akin to:
Q: "What's the difference between an honest man and a thief?"
A: "The thief got caught....and was convicted!"
...two subtle points: (1) caught and (2) convicted.
